This One Tops Them All–and I Thought I’d Seen Them All

It happened in the middle of Thursday’s snowstorm, when the streets were icy and people were crawling along. I was sitting at a busy intersection waiting for the light to change so I could get back to The Law Offices of Dianne Sawaya. The light turned green and while the other cars drove off a woman in the car in the lane next to me just sat there. And sat.

In the meantime, a car coming up on her had trouble stopping on the icy street and just missed slamming into the woman sitting at the intersection. Maybe that was enough to wake her up, because she finally started to make her turn.
As I drove by her, I saw why she sat there while nearly getting rear-ended: She had her cell phone propped on the steering wheel and was texting.
I couldn’t believe my eyes. Not only is it illegal to text while you’re driving (up to a $100 fine), but this was just plain stupid. Except for some lucky driving by the other car, it would have been a smasher, another needless Denver car accident that could have left someone hurt.
There are 34 states that have laws against texting while driving and 31 of them make it a primary offense, which means police can pull a car over and ticket the driver for that violation alone. Colorado is one of those states. I know funds are short for police departments, but from what this personal injury attorney is seeing on our roads today we could use more enforcement and more tickets. It would save lives.
