They're similar to the data recorders on airplanes and can tell a lot about what happened in an accident, both in your car and the at-fault driver's car. If you have a car with factory installed airbags, which most cars do, chances are good that you're already driving with a black box onboard. General Motors has been installing black boxes in all of its air bag-equipped vehicles since the early 1990s.
Under federal regulations issued recently, all cars made for North American consumers after Sept. 1, 2012 will have to be built to include the black boxes. They'll collect data including crash severity, seat belt usage, pre-crash data about how many events the vehicle may have been in, and brake application. They'll also record data like speed of the vehicle, steering inputs, whether lane departure warning systems were turned on and whether airbags deployed.
